Bhutan is one of the simplest international trips for Indian travellers to plan, needing no visa, though a little preparation around permits, altitude and the sustainable tourism fee still helps.

Paro and Thimphu form the core of nearly every itinerary, connected by just over an hour's scenic drive, with Bhutan's policy of limiting mass tourism keeping the overall pace calmer than most destinations. The country's Gross National Happiness philosophy genuinely shapes the travel experience, from unhurried sightseeing to an emphasis on cultural respect.

March to May and September to November offer the clearest mountain views and most comfortable temperatures, also coinciding with some of Bhutan's major festivals (tshechus) in various towns. Winter (December-February) brings cold, especially in the evenings, but also some of the clearest skies for mountain visibility.

Choosing between a direct Paro flight and the overland Bagdogra-Phuentsholing route is the other major cost decision, with the overland option typically cheaper but adding travel time.

Indian passport holders need a valid passport (or voter ID for short overland visits) and an online permit rather than a traditional visa, making the paperwork considerably simpler than most other international trips. Direct flights from cities like Delhi, Kolkata and Guwahati connect to Paro, while Bagdogra serves as the main gateway for the overland route.

Not allowing for altitude adjustment is a common oversight, since Paro and Thimphu sit at meaningful elevation and a demanding first-day itinerary like the Tiger's Nest hike can feel harder than expected. Another is underpacking for evening cold, even during the warmer travel seasons, since temperatures drop noticeably after sunset.

Timing the trip around a local tshechu festival, when the dates align, adds a layer of colour and cultural insight that a standard sightseeing itinerary doesn't offer. Trying traditional Bhutanese cuisine, built around chillies and local cheese, is a small but memorable part of the trip worth seeking out beyond hotel dining.
