About Petra
Petra is Jordan's single biggest draw and one of the most recognisable archaeological sites in the world — an entire city carved into rose-red sandstone cliffs by the Nabataeans over two thousand years ago. The approach through the narrow Siq canyon builds up to the first view of Al-Khazneh (the Treasury), the facade made famous by film and photography, and that's only the entrance to a much larger site. The Monastery (Ad-Deir), reached by a long uphill climb of around 800 steps, is quieter and arguably even more impressive, with far fewer crowds than the Treasury.
Petra genuinely needs a full day at minimum, and two days is better for travellers who want to add the Monastery hike and a slower pace through the wider site without rushing. The Petra by Night experience — the walk through the Siq lit entirely by candles, ending with music at the Treasury — runs a few evenings a week and is worth timing the trip around. The nearest town, Wadi Musa, has the hotel base for most visitors. As with the rest of Jordan, confirm current visa conditions for Indian passport holders, transport from Amman, hotel vouchers and travel insurance before booking, and plan for a lot of walking on uneven stone. Smiles To Miles can build Petra into a full Jordan itinerary with Amman, the Dead Sea and Wadi Rum.
